Two chests, made
in small numbers
A cigar keeps for years in the right box and dies in a month in the wrong one. These two were drawn for the house and made by hand, one lacquered and painted, one in burl walnut with the islands cut into the lid. Both are spoken for.
The Cagayan
The valley where the leaf grows, painted on the lid in gold over navy: the river, the palms, the nipa houses, the mountains behind. Fifteen coats of lacquer, polished by hand between each one, on a chest lined with Spanish cedar.

The Archipelago
The islands cut into the lid in the manner of an old chart, with the galleons, the compass rose and the names as they were written in 1734. Burl walnut, bound in brass at the corners and across the lid.

This is the chest that travels with a first order, and the one our partners keep on the counter. The twenty-five are gone.
69 %, and a lid that shuts
Spanish cedar
It holds humidity, keeps the beetle away and gives the leaf the faint sweetness that cedar gives. Everything else is cabinet-making.
Two-way humidity
A Boveda pack at 69 % releases and absorbs, so the same chest works in a dry room in Dubai and in a wet one in Manila. No water, no gel.
A seal you can hear
The lid closes with a slight sigh. That sound is the whole point of a humidor, and it is what takes the longest to build.
